Verona is easily accessed on the west–east Milan–Venice line as well as the north–south Brennero–Rome line. At least 30 trains daily run west from Venice (86 min. to 2 hr.). Even more arrive from Milan (85 min. to 2 hr.).
Trains also connect Verona with Vicenza (30–50 min.); Padua (5–50 min.); and Bologna (40 min. to 2 hr.).
The Stazione Porta Nuova train station (tel. 045-590-688) is located rather far south of the Piazza Brà (and Arena) area and is serviced by at least half a dozen local bus lines.
The bus network within the historical center is limited, so if you have luggage you'll most probably want a taxi to get to your hotel.

Planning your day: You could knock off the major sights (plus lunch) in six hours or so, and thus visit Verona as a day trip from Venice (or en route to or from Venice, as Verona is one a main rail line).
However, Verona truly deserves an overnight of its own. Its sights are a bit spread out around town, so it sakes a little while to see them all, plus it is simply a lovely place to spend the evening, with the liveliest shopping, restaurant, and nightlife scene of any town in the Veneto region, along with some great hotels.
