Driving to and parking in Verona, Italy

Diving to Verona

Coming from the east or west, the Serenissima autostrada (A4) passes just to the south of Verona. The exit for downtown Verona is Verona Sud.

This highway leads from Verona west to Milan (170km/106 miles; ~2 hr.), and east past Vicenza (60km/37 miles; ~45 min.) and Padova (95km/59 miles; ~1 hr.) to Venice (116km/72 miles; ~90 min).

Coming from the north or south, use the A22 autostrada, taking exit Verona Nord.

This will link Verona north to Trent (100km/62 miles; ~1 hr.), and south to Mantova (50km/31 miles; ~45 min.) and Modena (110km/68 miles; ~90 min.).

Driving in Verona

The historic center of Verona—basically everything north of Piazza Bra within the arc of the river—is now a ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone).

Tourists are allowed to drive into the city center only if their hotel is located within the ZTL—and you must let your hotelier know you have a car; he or she will register the license plate with the police and tell you where to park your car.

The official city site for all things traffic-related in Verona (in Italian, unfortunately) is Veronamobile.it.

Also handy: the city's civic website Comune.verona.it (which gives you all the city-center and ZTL traffic rules—again, in Italian).

Parking in Verona

The largest garages around the center of Verona are:

  • Via M.Bentegodi 8/Piazza Bra (€16/day; Sabait.it)
  • Piazza Cittadella (€18/day; Apcoa.it)

How long does Verona take?

Planning your day: You could knock off the major sights (plus lunch) in six hours or so, and thus visit Verona as a day trip from Venice (or en route to or from Venice, as Verona is one a main rail line).

However, Verona truly deserves an overnight of its own. Its sights are a bit spread out around town, so it sakes a little while to see them all, plus it is simply a lovely place to spend the evening, with the liveliest shopping, restaurant, and nightlife scene of any town in the Veneto region, along with some great hotels.
