This warren of stony rooms set in a 15th-century palazzo wraps around an open kitchen and burrows down into a labyrinth of basement levels where groups of students often bring with them a genially rowdy atmosphere.
That open kitchen serves up a long menu of usually excellent Italian food, everything from pizza to a classic, platter-smothering bistecca fiorentina.
The zuppa pavese is a good vegetable soup, but try the penne Vecchia Firenze (pasta quills in a subtle creamy mushroom sauce with tomatoes). But if your appetite runs more to coniglio alla griglia (grilled rabbit) or branzino alla griglia (grilled sea bass), you won't be disappointed.
They love children here, and this was my family's favorite Florentine restaurant when I was 12. The owner, tickled pink one night that a little American boy was struggling to speak Italian, took over our meal, had all the wonders of Tuscan cuisine brought to our table, introduced us to grappa, and kept me up well past my bedtime.
