Naples' most famous—and heavily touristed—pizzeria is so proud of its traditions that rather than hide the kitchen, Brandi displays prominently the blue and white tiled wood-fired oven and gleaming marble counters where skilled pizzaioli ply their craft.
It was opened in 1780, but didn't become world-famous for more than a century. Popular legend holds that it was on this very spot, in June of 1889, that, in honor of a visit by King Umberto I and his queen, the owner and pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito concocted a patriotic pizza modeled after the colors in the country's new flag: white mozzarella di bufala, red tomato sauce, and green basil.
He named it after the queen herself, pizza Margherita. The rest is history, as Esposito's pizza margherita became the basis for the standard "plain pizza" across the world.
(The unRomantic point out that, while the Queen's name was, indeed, "Margherita," that this also means "Daisy," and that the pizza already existed and was, in fact, simply named for the flower. These unimginiteve sould cannot, however, explain just how a disc of red dotted with blobs of white and broad spears of green is supposed to resemble a flower with a brown center and narrow yellow petals.)
Book ahead for one of the six outside tables, or be contented with restaurant-style dining on cloth-covered tables inside.
Although the hordes descend here just for the pizza (which is actually pretty good), Brandi does offer pasta dishes like linguine agli scampi, and some secondi as well, such as scaloppine al limone.
