A room at the Hotel Firenze, Florence
A room at the Hotel Firenze, Florence

Boring, but on a hidden piazza bang in the exact center of Florence, a short walk from... well, everything

This former student hangout is still partly used as a study-abroad dorm, but has otherwise been smartened up into a three-star hotel.

The rooms are achingly dull, but it has one huge selling point: It is the most central hotel in all of Florence.

The location is divine, tucked away on its own little hidden piazza at the very heart of the centro storico's pedestrian zone, just off via del Corso (the Decamanus Maximus, or Main Street, of Roman-era Fiorentina), a three-minute walk from the Duomo in one direction and the Uffizi in the other.

That said, this hotel is far too institutional and boring to justify the midrange rates.

The rooms are brightly tiled and (finally!) have a bit of decor about them, but remain quite small and overall bland.

This is a large operation without any of the warmth or ambience of a small, family-run hotel, and the concierge and management are efficient but generally uninvolved.

Also, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the ants that marched busily along the baseboard of my room. (Hey, it's not like I haven't battled ants in my own house, and the place does seem clean overall, but I felt it needed saying.)

Still: A phenomenal location.
