Civica Galleria d'Arte Moderna

The sumptuous palazzo, where Napoléon and his stepson Eugene de Beauharnais lived, houses a collection that is "modern" in the true 19th-century sense.

The salons are filled with works by Lombardians and other Italian painters who embraced trends from France.

You'll probably be more familiar with the works by Cézanne, Gauguin, and other non-Italian modernists also included in the galleries (in a section housing the noted Grassi Collection), but it's fascinating to see the same dreamy landscapes and the flight from creeping industrialism reflected in the works of lesser known Italian artists.

The upper-floors of the museum house the equestrian works of 20th-century sculptor Marino Marini.
