Hotel Miramalfi

A clifftop hotel in the Amalfi Coast town of Amalfi

Built to take advantage of its panoramic position, terraced down the cliffs below the Amalfi Drive, the Miramalfi is a 5–10 minute walk west from the center and boasts four-star amenities and stupendous vistas that make it worth the splurge—and the short stroll from town (the hotel also provides a free shuttle service).

Most accommodations have been redone in light green—from the cool Vietri-tile floors to the wicker furnishings—however a few remain the same unattractively green-and-brown as the circa 1960 day they were born.

The beds are real—no squishy cots here, but box springs and mattresses—and there's a sunny dining room. Gauzy curtains part to reveal small private terraces with fantastic views of the sea, Amalfi, and on clear days the Cliento coast beyond.

Below the hotel spill lots of narrow sunbathing ledges terracing down to a panoramic salt-water pool and, below, rocks off of which you can dive into the emerald waters of the sea itself.

If you don't fancy a walk into town there's a restaurant (with live music some nights).

How long does Amalfi take?

Planning your time: You could see every official "sight" in the town of Amalfi in 60–90 minutes—though it is a lovely place to relax for a while, maybe take a cappuccino on the piazza overlooking the steps up to the Duomo.

Amalfi also makes an ideal place to spend the night. It has several good restaurants, and the town is just large enough to keep the feeling that there's a bit of local life beyond the tourism, making it a joy to wander (the others—Positano and Ravello especially, may be more postcard-quaint and pretty, but Amalfi feels more real).

Besides, it is the one place on the Amalfi Coast where you have to switch buses—either to return west up the coast toward Postiano and Sorrento, to made a side trip up to pretty Ravello, or to continue east along the coast to Salerno.
