Hotel Il San Pietro ★★★

Where the modern jet set stays in the Amalfi Coast town of Positano

Located atop of cliff about a mile outside of Positano, the San Pietro has been the luxury hotel of choice for discerning guests and international celebrities for several years—the Hollywood elite (George Clooney, Julia Roberts, etc.) certainly seems to favor it).

They come for the quiet elegance, the refined fare at the restaurant, the remove from the crowds of Positano, and the posh guest rooms (part 18th-century Gilded Age, part fabulous 1970s kitsch) that tumble down the cliffside among terraced gardens. There's also a tiny pool and, for breezy escape and a view of the coast quite different from that afforded on the Amalfi Drive, free morning trips along the coast in a private boat.

At the base of the cliff, reached by an elevator drilled down through the rock, is the hotel's crowning glory, unusual on the Amalfi Coast: a private beach and sunbathing terrace.

What they don't necessarily crow about is the fact that the Hotel San Pietro is a (relative) bargain: though room rates start higher here than at the rival Le Sirenuse in town, all of the rooms at the San Pietro have a sea view—and many of these actually cost less than the cheapest sea-view room at Le Sirenuse. (Perhaps hunting for a bargain seems a bit silly when you're already shopping in the €400 to €600-per-night range, but all the same, the San Pietro is probably the better deal.)
