Hotel Il Granaio dei Casabelli

A beautiful and homely hotel near the ruins of Paestum on the Cliento Coast

This hotel occupies a converted old granary right across the street from the Aurea Gate to the ruins site. This means that some of the 14 rooms—simple but spacious, filled with family antiques—actually have full-on views of the ancient temples from their windows. Wow.

It exudes a real home-from-home feel, and the owners and staff are as friendly as can be. You can relax from the hot and dusty day at the archaeological site with a quiet stroll amid the hotel garden shaded by olives, pines, and fruit trees and scented with oleander.

There's also a restaurant (with garden dining in summer) serving homey Campanian specialties.

How long does Paestum take?

Planning your time: Give yourself at least a good 2–3 hours at the site and museum—after all, you made the effort and came all this way.

Unelss you can knock it off first thing in the morning, make Paestum an afternoon activity, starting with lunch, then some beach time (and mozzarella time), holding off on the museum and archaeological site until things cool off in the later afternoon—plus, this way you get to watch the sunset light up the stones of the ruins before turning in for the night then moving on the morning.
