A cafe from 1865 on Verona' prettiest little square
Verona's grande dame of the local cafe society is the Antico Caffè Dante in the beautiful Piazza dei Signori.
Verona's oldest cafe, it is rather formal indoors (read: expensive) where meals are served.
But it's most recommended for those who want to soak up the million-dollar view of one of Verona's loveliest ancient squares from the outdoor tables smack in the middle of it all.
During the Arena summer season, this is the traditional après-opera spot to complete—and contemplate—the evening's experience.
Tips
You will notice that all restaurants (and sights and hotels) on this site have a ReidsItaly.com star designation from ☆☆☆ to ★★★.
This merely indicates that I feel these eateries offer a little something that makes them special (or extra-special, or extra-extra special, etc.).
These star ratings are entirely based on personal opinion, and have nothing to do with any official local restaurant ratings or grades.
In general, a pricier restaurant has to impress me that it is worth the added expense.
This is why I give ★★★ to some inexpensive eateries or sandwich shops that happen provide amazing value for the money—and similarly have ranked a few fancy but notable restaurants just ★★☆.
Here at ReidsItaly.com we simply provide a general price range indicating the general amount you should expect to pay for a full meal in the eatery.
Each eatery is rated into a price category, which indicates—very roughly—what you could expect to pay, per person, for a standard full meal: Three courses—primo (first course), secondo (main course), and contorno (side) or dolce (dessert)—plus something to drink.
There are three price ranges, giving you a sense of which restaurants are budget, which are moderate, and which are splurges:
€ | under €15 |
€€ | under €40 |
€€€ | over €40 |

Stop At: Verona's Cathedral (Duomo), Verona, Province of Verona, Veneto
The city of Verona is known worldwide for Romeo and Juliet legend and for the opera season which takes place on summer evenings in the magnificent scenery of a Roman amphitheater. Verona is primarily a beautiful city of art, located at the foot of the last offshoots of the Alps. The town is crossed by the second longest Italian river, the Adige, that descends from the Alpine valleys into the Adriatic sea.
The city has important monuments: Roman Amphitheater, Theaters, walls and gates, and also beautiful Romanesque and Gothic churches (San Zeno, the Cathedral, St. Anastasia, St. Fermo, Santa Maria Antica with the "Arche Scaligere"). We can find interesting public buildings (ancient palaces around Piazza Erbe, Piazza Dante and Castelvecchio now the Civic art Museum) and private especially of the Renaissance period, due to the genius of Michele Sammicheli, and other architects. Verona is known as the second art city of the Veneto region just after Venice.
Verona has experienced moments of splendor with the Scaligeri, with special guests such as the Florentine Dante Alighieri. And William Shakespeare has used the scenery of Verona for Romeo and Juliet, the story of two young lovers, whose legendary tomb, with the house and the famous balcony, are annually visited by thousands of tourists.
To be reported the remains of fortifications from different eras: parts of the Roman period almost 2000 years ago (two gates have been preserved: Porta Borsari and Porta Leoni), the medieval and Renaissance walls that enclose a wide area of the ancient city, those of the Austrian domination and barracks scattered around the town, and on all the surrounding hills.

Stop At: Santa Maria In Valverde
The Valpolicella is located in the province of Verona, north west of the city, close to the reliefs in between Verona and the Adige Valley near Lake Garda, with whom the Valpolicella has in common, thanks to the sun exposure and mild temperatures, an almost Mediterranean climate and a gentle landscape of vineyards and olive groves, dotted with cypress trees.
The Valpolicella is not a single valley, but an integrated set of three major valleys almost parallel and sloping from north to south (those of Negrar, Marano and Fumane), forming an area of undulating hills, gentle slopes, of small gathered hollows , ranging from 80m above sea level along the river Adige, to 1540mt of the watershed from Trentino region. The landscape has evocative variety of panoramas.
The underground sedimentary rocks allowed, since ancient times, the extraction and the processing of Verona marble and Prun Stone, also used for the ancient buildings construction of Verona, Venice and other Italian cities.
The Valpolicella makes very nice red wines, but the most important and well known all over the world is the Amarone. In the VIth century, Flavius Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator praised the great quality of the Acinaticus, a wine produced in the Valpolicella area. Today, we can consider the Amarone to be a direct descendant of this Acinaticus, a wine that has been so well praised in ancient times. However, the ancestor of the Acinaticus was very different to the current Amarone. It was a dense and sweetish wine that is probably more similar to today's Recioto.

Discover the history and processes that lead to the production of world-renowned Veronese wines such as Amarone Classico, Valpolicella Ripasso and Soave, along with the internationally esteemed Decima Aurea Merlot and Torre Pieve Chardonnay. Choose from three tasting experiences to suit your preferences.
Tour the winery, vineyards, villa and gardens. Writings dating back to the 18th century, when the Villa hosted a literary salon, attest its unspoiled allure and splendor. The noble facade of neoclassical design, adorned with decorative statues of figures from Greek myths, stands framed against a backdrop of contrasting greens. Inside, the magnificent Chamber of the Muses with its astonishing frescoes offer a remarkable example of the Italian artistic mastery.
The English-style gardens, listed among the Great Italian Gardens for their historical and aesthetic value, weave a fairy-tale atmosphere and combine a rolling landscape, exotic plants and a pond, fed by springs.
The experience then culminates with a visit to the cellars, which played a significant role in the history of Veronese wine making, giving its name to Amarone. Today, in this same storied location, Gaetano Bertani and his sons continue the three-century-old family tradition.
The tastings will allow you to discover a variety of Tenuta Santa Maria Alla Pieve the Bertany Family private Estate grown wines, from the Veronese Amarone, Valpolicella and Soave, produced with autochthonous grapes from the region, to Merlot and Chardonnay, personal projects of Gaetano Bertani. You will learn about the techniques that lead to their production, such as the appassimento and the ripasso techniques.
The Tradition tasting:
This tasting will allow you to experience the three traditional Veronese wines, produced in two valleys with indigenous grapes. The elegant Soave, from the white Garganega grape, followed by two blends of the indigenous red grapes Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella: the Valpolicella Ripasso and the Amarone Classico, both made using the appassimento technique an air-drying technique that results in Amarones intense flavor and smooth tannins.
The Premium tasting:
Enjoy the most refined wines from the Bertani familys production: Amarone Classico and Soave, made from indigenous grapes, and Decima Aurea Merlot and Torre Pieve Chardonnay, made from international varietals, personal projects by Gaetano Bertani. Each, in its own way, serves to express a unique aspect of the wine making traditions native to the Verona area.
The Selection tasting:
Experience the evolution of different vintages of the excellence to be found in the Bertani familys winery: three vintages of the elegant Decima Aurea Merlot, made with partial appassimento technique, the current Amarone Classico vintage and the complex Torre Pieve Chardonnay.
It's about 5 hectares of vineyards and 6 hectares of olive groves: it's a very small family business.
The farm is also officially run under the conversion to the organic farming system.
The cellar is still very small and the idea of the wine tasting experience is to you.
A walk through the winery will be the best way to start the tasting experience, in a structure full of charm and history with an enchanting and privileged position.
You will taste 5 types of wines, among which the Valpolicella, the Amarone and more of them, including a light lunch!
