Where to stay in Rome

The Albergo Abruzzi has Pantheon views at moderate rates

Rome hotels, B&Bs, apartment rentals, and other places to spend the night

Rome has 1,000 hotels—half of which are overpriced. I'm here to help you avoid those and find the hidden gems, best values, and most wonderfully cheap places to stay in Rome.

Something like one third of Rome hotels are slung into the streets around Termini train station—nothing wrong with the area (anymore; used to be dicey), but you didn't come all this way to see the train station, and the area is a good half hour away from the historic center by bus or Metro (about 45 to 60 minutes on foot).

If I had a choice, I'd stay in the center.

Then there are other lodging options—like B&Bs (2,000 of them) or apartments (281), hostels (200) and residences (37)—that can cost less than a hotel and offer a more interesting experience to boot.

Tips

Where to look for a room in [[place]]

As in many cities, the heartland of cheap hotels in Rome is the streets surrounding the main train station (Termini). Also as in many cities, the streets around the station comprise a boring 19th-century grid a good half hour by bus or subway from the city center and most of the sights.

Still, when the best hotels downtown are full, you're likely Sto find rooms available around Termini. The streets north/northwest of the station are the nicest and have a better clutch of quirky, fun, inexpensive hotels, while the streets to the south of Termini (towards the church of Santa Maria Maggiore) tend to be a bit seedier and full of bland—if relatively cheap—tourist-class hotels.

This odd arrangement is a legacy of the fact that, 15 years ago, things were reversed: it was the area to the south that was nicer (and therefore filled with cookie-cutter hotels catering to packaged tours and bus groups) while the area to the north was dicier (and hence full of backpacker flophouses, which—since the neighborhood has been cleaned up—have renovated themselves into funky little hotels).

Rome's hotel tax

In 2011, Rome began charging a hotel bed tax. This is the city's doing, and sadly it is not a scam.

The following tax rates are per person, per night for all guests over the age of 10 and can be charged for stays of up to 10 days:

  • 1–2 star hotels: €3
  • 3 star hotels: €4
  • 4 star hotels: €6
  • 5 star hotels: €7
  • B&Bs: €3.50
  • Apartments: €3.50
  • Rental rooms: €3.50
  • Agriturismi: €4
  • Campsites: €2 (up to 5 days)

So a couple staying three nights in a four-star room would pay an extra €36.

Some hotels have begun folding this tax into their quoted rates; others tack it on when you go to check out, so be prepared.

About the lodging star ratings (☆☆☆ to ★★★)

You will notice that all hotels, B&Bs, and other lodgingds (as well as sights and restaurants) on this site have a ReidsItaly.com star designation from ☆☆☆ to ★★★.

This merely indicates that I feel these accommodations offer a little something that makes them special (or extra-special, or extra-extra special, etc.).

These star ratings are entirely based on personal opinion, and have nothing to do with the official Italian hotel ratings—which have more to do with quantifiable amenities such as minibars, and not the intangibles that make a hotel truly stand out, like a combination of great location, friendly owners, nice style, and low prices.

In general, a pricier place to stay has to impress me that it is worth the added expense.

This is why I give ★★★ to some (official) "two-star" hotels or B&Bs that happen to provide amazing value for the money—and similarly have ranked a few (official) "four-star" properties just (★★☆).

About the lodging price brackets (€–€€€)

Accommodations rates vary wildly—even at the same hotel or B&B—depending on type of room, number of people in it, and the season.

That's why here at ReidsItaly.com we simply provde a general price range indicating the rough rate you should expect to pay for a standard double room in mid-season.

There are three price ranges, giving you a sense of which lodgings are budget, which are moderate, and which are splurges:

under €100
€€ €100–€200
€€€ over €200

* You can use this formula for all Italian ten-place numbers—so 31 is trent'uno, 32 is trenta due, 33 is trenta tre, etc. Note that—like uno (one), otto (eight) also starts with a vowel—all "-8" numbers are also abbreviated (vent'otto, trent'otto, etc.).
