Gardens so gorgeous they inspired a Wagner opera
The Rufolo were Ravello's most powerful family in the Middle Ages, and it's a sign of how long the Arab influence lingered in Southern Italy that most of the villa—anchored by a no-nonsense 100-foot stone tower and started in the 11th–13th centuries—is tinged with Islamic architectural influence, especially in the distinctly Moorish courtyard.
The Rufolo family added to for generations in Saracen and Norman styles. The rooms of the restructured central villa are now used for art exhibits.
The surrounding grounds—filled with intimate flowering gardens set into the extensive villa ruins above a spectacular view down the eastern Amalfi Coast—are the backdrop for excellent outdoor concerts.
This is only appropriate, since upon seeing this tropical paradise in 1880, composer Richard Wagner exclaimed "The magical garden of Klingsor has been found!" and, inspired, went on to complete his Parsifal.
To see live music al fresco here, see the "concerts under the stars" page.
The Ravello Concert Society organizes concerts and performances in the Amalfi Coast, making its concert season the cultural event of the year in the region. The Annunziata Building, with two acoustically rich recital halls, lends itself perfectly for the society's performances.
Built in 1281 by the Fusco family, it then became part of the Rufolo family estate. Located just beyond the Villa Rufolo Park, the building is famous for its garden and domes overlooking the town and sea. Please note that performances take place INSIDE of the Annunziata Building and thus, there is no view on the sea.
The only access to the building is by 90 steps; there is no direct car access. Performances also take place in the former Grand Caruso Wine Cellars, now the Ravello Art Center: a smaller venue which allows spectators to have a more intimate chamber music experience. It is conveniently located near Ravello's main square.
Ravello, one of the gems of the Amalfi Coast, is a perfect combination of natural beauties, artistic monuments and cultural memories. It is well-known that Wagner found in Villa Rufolo both the inspiration for the scenery of PARSIFAL's second act, and the ideas to improve the whole musical structure of his last symphonies.
Verdi stayed at the Villa Rufolo as well. Many great musicians and conductors, like Bruno Walter, Arturo Toscanini, Enrico Caruso, and Leonard Bernstein, stayed and worked here.
This musical vacation continues today thanks to the commitment of the Ravello Concert Society. Beautiful concerts are organized throughout the tourist season, enchanting concert goers from around the world.
The top highlights include:
Ravello Town
Amalfi Town
San Pantaleone
Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone

Book now your Amalfi, Ravello and Pompeii tour from Positano!
Starting from the ports of either Naples, Salerno, Positano, or Sorrento, after about 75 minutes of driving you'll reach the famous Amalfi Coast, an outstanding example of Mediterranean landscape and Italy's most scenic coastline. The most famous towns along the coast are Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. These towns have inspired artists for centuries.
Probably the best description of Positano was made by John Steinbeck in his first trip to this town. It is a dream place that isnt quite real when you are there and becomes real after you have gone. the houses are located on a hill so steep it would normally be considered a cliff except that stairs are cut in to the hillside. Most house foundations are vertical, while in Positano they are horizontal. The small curving bay of unbelievably blue and green water laps gently on a beach of small pebbles. There is only one narrow street and it does not come down to the water. Everything else is stairs, some of them as steep as ladders. You do not walk to visit a friend, you either climb or slide.
Amalfi was an independent republic from the 7th century until the year 1075, and rivaled with Pisa and Genoa for prosperity and maritime importance in the Mediterranean. The most important monuments are the Cathedral of St. Andrew, originally built in 11th C. in Arabian-Sicilian style. There are many old elements located in the Cathedral like the famous bronze doors imported from Constantinople and the Chapel of Crucified. The rich facade is decorated with mosaics and is a reconstruction from the 18th century. The interior, thoroughly restored, consists of a nave, aisles, and chapels. From the forth chapel on the right a flight of steps descends to the crypt, built in 1253. Below the altar rests the body of St. Andrew the Apostle, brought here from Constantinople in 1208, as evidence of the participation of Amalfi to the IV Crusade.
Located 1100 feet above the see level, Ravello was founded in the 9th century under the rule of Amalfi. The town is a garden of beauty, full of art, history, and flowers. The main square is dominated by the Duomo of St. Pantaleone, built in the 1086. The facade has three portals. In the central one are the famous bronze doors sculpted by Barisano Da Trani in 1180. On one side of the square is the entrance to Villa Rufolo, an example of Norman-Saracenic buildings from the 11th century. Partly in ruins, the palace is surrounded by a famous tropical garden. A short walk from the square is Villa Cimbrone, with a beautiful lush garden. At the end of this garden is the famous Belvedere Cimbrone, the furthest point of the ridge on which Ravello lies. Every year from early April to the end of October the gardens of Villa Rufolo are home to the prestigious Ravello Music Festival, which is one of the oldest music festivals in Italy.

Description
The shore excursion pick-up in Naples, will reach you at the established place, here we will present ourselves correctly, and then we will head towards Sorrento along the famous road called the "Costiera Amalfitana" or "The Amalfi Coast".
Sorrento
Our first stop will be made in Sorrento. To reach the international city of Sorrento it is necessary to drive the coastal road to its furthest point. Spectacular views of the entire Gulf of Naples and the island of Capri (which was once joined to Sorrento) are revealed as the Amalfi coast road emerges from above the mountain cliff. A short trip through the city before arriving in the center - an important commercial center for the local population and tourists, with many shops (normally open between 09: 00-13: 00 and from 16:00 - 20:00, approximately) . Sorrento, despite being a city from the past, has an interesting history "Correale di Terranova" museum, which can be visited in the morning, with a stop of about 2 hours
Positano
Starting from Sorrento it takes about 45 minutes to reach Positano, Driving downhill directly through Positano, going down the one-way street unique in its panorama, passing through many local restaurants, leads to the heart of the city - the busy central Piazza dei Mulini, which is connected to a narrow downhill path that leads to the seafront. In Piazza dei Mulini, it is necessary to leave the car as all the roads leading to the promenade are only for pedestrians. These roads also lead to the cathedral, shops selling ceramics, lemons, shoes and "Positano fashion" clothing. There is a short walk uphill to get back to the car and this time, going up the mountain, returning to the main coastal road that leads to Amalfi.
Here we are at the destination of our tour, and the right time and the right place to stop in one of the many typical restaurants that are along our itinerary, lunched calmly, we continue along the coastal road, this starts after Sorrento, crosses Positano, the fishing villages of Praiano, Furore and Conca dei Marini, and continue until you reach the crowded square of Amalfi which is located in front of the sea - port and a long stretch of pebble beach. Opposite the port of Amalfi, there is the one and only bus station along the coast. Behind this square is the main shopping street of Amalfi that ends at the farthest and highest point of the city. Along the pedestrian street are various bars and cafes, not to mention the numerous shops selling limoncello, casual wear, swimwear, gifts, basic groceries, and of course, ceramics. However, if you would like to see more than just shops, Amalfi boasts some interesting places to explore: the most spectacular cathedral along the coast, the paper factory and its museum. An uphill walk along a very narrow road that passes several wineries and olive factories etc ....
Amalfi
After stopping in Amalfi, we set off for Ravello, a rural UNESCO heritage village, perched on the top of the mountain cliff located above Amalfi and Minori. Ravello, and famous for its breathtaking views, natural beauty and ancient monuments are best represented in the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. In high season, these gardens are full of blooming secant sweets, shadows of flora and the scent of lemons. There are also many classical music concerts held in the gardens of Villa Rufolo, located just off the main square of Ravello. Apart from the main cathedral, also located in the square, and a history museum built in the basement of the cathedral, there are many other churches to visit as it used to be a total of 13 churches in the country. Along the narrow arcades of Via Roma you will find some small boutiques and souvenir shops.
Our rates include transport by comfortable car, equipped with air conditioning, motorway tolls, car fuel and parking.
Exclude: admission tickets, lunch and any extras and tips.

* You can use this formula for all Italian ten-place numbers—so 31 is trent'uno, 32 is trenta due, 33 is trenta tre, etc. Note that—like uno (one), otto (eight) also starts with a vowel—all "-8" numbers are also abbreviated (vent'otto, trent'otto, etc.).
