The best of the restaurants right near the archaeological site
Among the countless glorified pizza joints with polyglot menus on modern Pompei's main drag, Zi Caterina stands out for its solid cooking and reasonable prices.
Not that it's not still touristy—anything near the ruins in Pompei is guaranteed that—just that it's a cut above the rest.
The cavernous single room, antiqued with lots of wood, can get noisy as it fills up and the strolling troubadour starts strumming his guitar.
The delicious risotto alla pescatora is heavily laden with shellfish, calamari, and shrimp, and the gnocchi alla sorrentina is also good.
Secondi tend to be fishy as well, with a beach platter saute di frutti di mare (clams, oysters, and mussels) or baccalà (dried salt cod), but landlubbers can always order coniglio alla cacciatora (rabbit stewed with tomatoes and mushrooms).
They also do several menu turistico for €16 ($19) to €24 ($29).
Tips
You will notice that all restaurants (and sights and hotels) on this site have a ReidsItaly.com star designation from ☆☆☆ to ★★★.
This merely indicates that I feel these eateries offer a little something that makes them special (or extra-special, or extra-extra special, etc.).
These star ratings are entirely based on personal opinion, and have nothing to do with any official local restaurant ratings or grades.
In general, a pricier restaurant has to impress me that it is worth the added expense.
This is why I give ★★★ to some inexpensive eateries or sandwich shops that happen provide amazing value for the money—and similarly have ranked a few fancy but notable restaurants just ★★☆.
Here at ReidsItaly.com we simply provide a general price range indicating the general amount you should expect to pay for a full meal in the eatery.
Each eatery is rated into a price category, which indicates—very roughly—what you could expect to pay, per person, for a standard full meal: Three courses—primo (first course), secondo (main course), and contorno (side) or dolce (dessert)—plus something to drink.
There are three price ranges, giving you a sense of which restaurants are budget, which are moderate, and which are splurges:
€ | under €15 |
€€ | under €40 |
€€€ | over €40 |

Stop At: Pompeii - Archaeological Area., Pompeii, Province of Naples, Campania
Pompeii is simply a miracle: the most incredible gift the Mt Vesuvius could ever give us. It was buried under 20 ft of soft volcanic debris. This left the ground levels basically intact. Most my guests do no expect it to be so big and well preserved. We will check the Forum, the Bath House, the Theatre. But - even more interesting - we will visit their private homes, the streets, the shops. We will learn about daily life in Ancient Rome. We will feel the presence of the ancient pompeians, feel their struggle for life, their virtues and vices, just normal people like all of us!
Duration: 3 hours
Stop At: Parco Acheologico di Ercolano, Ercolano, Province of Naples, Campania
Herculaneum suffered the same destiny as Pompeii, but it is located closer to the volcano. Therefore nearly 60 ft. of hard volcanic couch still covers the Ancient Town. That has preserved even remains of carbonized organics, such as doors, windonws, shelves and...a boat! Not-to-miss is the walk down the Marina, where we will suddenly have the terrific vision of many skeletons found there.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Vesuvius National Park, Ottaviano, Province of Naples, Campania
