An amazing British painter whose work presages the Impressionists

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was a prolific and multi-talented Romantic artist who tried on many styles throughout his career.

In particular, the mood-laden, freely-brushed watercolor landscapes he often favored greatly influenced Monet and the coming Impressionist movement.
