Discounts available with a railcard in Italy

Italian rail cards are annual passes, so they only really make sense if you plan to travel a lot by train—but with a few, the savings can be substantial enough to make them worthwhile even for folks spending only a few weeks in Italy.

The trick is that, to get these cards, you need an address in Italy (no big problem; just use your hotel), and you need a codice fiscalethe tax ID every Italian or Italy resident has. » more

That intel in hand, you can purchase these cards or discounts online or at most major train stations.

  • CartaFRECCIA. This card is free, and will get you access to various discount fares available on the La Frecce network of high-speed trains. You also need it to take advantage of  the following age-based fares on all sort of Italian trains (not just La Frecce):
    • Offerta Young: Discounts of 30%–50% for anyone under age 30 on all trains in all classes (except "Executive"). Must book 24 hours in advance.

* You can use this formula for all Italian ten-place numbers—so 31 is trent'uno, 32 is trenta due, 33 is trenta tre, etc. Note that—like uno (one), otto (eight) also starts with a vowel—all "-8" numbers are also abbreviated (vent'otto, trent'otto, etc.).
