Fiesole's 11th-century Cathedral contains some delicate Mino da Fiesole carvings

The cathedral's 13th-century bell tower, with its comically oversize crenellations added in the 18th century, can be spotted for miles around.

The cathedral is a pleasingly plain medieval church, built in 1028 using columns from nearby Roman buildings.

On the high altar is lovely, early 15th-century Coronation of the Virgin fresco by Bicci di Lorenzo.

There are coin-op lights to illuminate the nave and presbytery and another set for the half-submerged crypt, so bring pocket change.

The crypt is supported by slender columns with primitive, 11C carvings on the capitals.

The remains of St. Romolo, Fiesole's patron, reside under the altar, and the c. 1590 lunette frescoes by Nicodemo Ferrucci tell his story.

There's a spot near the front of the crypt where you can see through the floor to a bit of Roman road and column bases, discovered during restoration in the early 1990s.

* You can use this formula for all Italian ten-place numbers—so 31 is trent'uno, 32 is trenta due, 33 is trenta tre, etc. Note that—like uno (one), otto (eight) also starts with a vowel—all "-8" numbers are also abbreviated (vent'otto, trent'otto, etc.).
