A refined restaurant worth the splurge
If you're feeling the heady dolce vita and want to splash out, head to this least chillingly-priced of Amalfi's fine seafood restaurants—the first in all of Southern Italy to receive a coveted Michelin Star.
A refined setting since 1959—with a guest book from Federico Fellini to Andy Warhol to the Queen of Belgium to Jackie Kennedy (while she was First Lady)—Caravella's stuccoed rooms decorated with Vietri ceramics, discreet service, ample wine list, and subtly flavored dishes are steeped in Amalfitani tradition. Reservations are highly recommended.
Open with their specialty scialatelli alla caravella (handmade pasta in a tomato-seafood sauce), ovoletti di provola e rucola con pomodorini (glorified ravioli stuffed with parmigiano), or paccheri di gargano con cozze, patate, e rucola (wide ribbons of pasta piled with mussels, arugula, and boiled potatoes in cream sauce).
Most order fresh pesce al forno con patate (oven roasted fish served with roasted potatoes) or pescato del giorno all'acqua pazza (fish of the day with tiny tomatoes) for secondo, but meat eaters should be happy with a filetto di manzo al Barolo (beef fillet in red wine).
Save room for their renowned lemon soufflé (supposedly for two only, but they've served it to me solo).
They also now operate a small shop selling wine and ceramics.
Tips
You will notice that all restaurants (and sights and hotels) on this site have a ReidsItaly.com star designation from ☆☆☆ to ★★★.
This merely indicates that I feel these eateries offer a little something that makes them special (or extra-special, or extra-extra special, etc.).
These star ratings are entirely based on personal opinion, and have nothing to do with any official local restaurant ratings or grades.
In general, a pricier restaurant has to impress me that it is worth the added expense.
This is why I give ★★★ to some inexpensive eateries or sandwich shops that happen provide amazing value for the money—and similarly have ranked a few fancy but notable restaurants just ★★☆.
Here at ReidsItaly.com we simply provide a general price range indicating the general amount you should expect to pay for a full meal in the eatery.
Each eatery is rated into a price category, which indicates—very roughly—what you could expect to pay, per person, for a standard full meal: Three courses—primo (first course), secondo (main course), and contorno (side) or dolce (dessert)—plus something to drink.
There are three price ranges, giving you a sense of which restaurants are budget, which are moderate, and which are splurges:
€ | under €15 |
€€ | under €40 |
€€€ | over €40 |

The Amalfi Coast, Italy is a beautiful and renowned stretch of mountainous coastline south of Naples, in Campania. The southern end of the Bay of Naples stretches out in a steep and rocky peninsula that reaches towards the Isle of Capri. The southern side of the peninsula is dotted with picturesque villages and towns clinging giddily to cliffs: this is what is known as the Amalfi Coast.
The tour starts from Piazza Duomo in Amalfi at the foot of the stairs of the Cathedral at 10.30 in the morning. Along the main street of the old town, Via Pietro Capuano, passing through the ancient walls that defined the boundaries of the town, Arch of Faenza, comes the Museum of the Paper, to continue to the Mills Valley. At the height of the old paper mill Amatruda you enter the terraces cultivated with lemon.
Here along the dry stone stairways, we will see the famous "gardens", a succession of places rich in trees of "sfusato amalfitano", the most famous Amalfi lemon, arrived centuries ago from the East, which now boasts the recognition European Protected Geographical Indication.
Take a small break in the shade of an area equipped with tables and chairs and taste this amazing fruit: insalata citrus, sweet lemon, lemonade, cookies and... Much more!
From here, coming out of the lemon, you will go to visit the Museum of Rural Life Arts and Crafts, a small collection of historical pieces and documents that tell of a glorious past, which has helped to renew the glories of the ancient Maritime Republic.
Enter in the adjacent room used for the processing of these fruits, where, after the drawing on the procedure for obtaining the famous elixir, limoncello, you finally taste other delicious products.
Enjoy this amazing special journey with your friends and family!
