Stop At: Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto), Positano, Amalfi Coast, Province of Salerno, Campania
The Grotta of Smeraldo known as well with the name of "Emerald Cave" was named after the characteristic green light inside the cave. It is caused by natural sunlight from outside which enters the cave through an underground passage, which connects the salt water lake in the huge chamber with the sea outside. The water filters the sunlight and only green wave lengths reach the cave. The cave consists only of a single huge chamber. The lake inside is 45m by 32m big and the chamber is 24m high, above the sea level. There are some speleothems, as this is actually a karst cave. The cave was formed above the sea level, at a time when the sea was much deeper. Later the sea rose and flooded the entrance, or better the land went down, which is caused by the volcanic activities in the area. Some stalagmites on the floor were flooded.

The bay of Conca dei Marini is a very characteristic area because it hosts a series of white houses and a very particular and suggestive harbor.

Just in this area there is, for example, the famous Emerald Grotto, which is attacked every year by the many tourists who visit Amalfi and its surroundings.
There are several ancient texts that hypothesized the presence of a cave with these features in the area, but no more precise information circulated in the early twentieth century and each item assumed the connotations of rumor or legend.
The existence of the cave was unknown until 1932, when a fisherman by chance discovered its existence.

Land of colors, sirens, city of gardens: there are so many definitions attributed to Sorrento, home of the great Torquato Tasso. In fact, in each there is a fund of truth, a piece of history of this millenary city influenced over the centuries by different cultures: Greeks, Romans, Normans, Aragonese have all passed through here leaving, each civilization, its own imprint and receiving in return the fruits of a generous nature and the poignant landscapes of one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in the world. From the nineteenth century, Sorrento is a pleasant tourist city, with a very strong bond with the Anglo-Saxon world dating back to the so-called "Grand Tour", when knowledge of the Mediterranean was an essential baggage for the formation of the Central European aristocracy. The result was a very different atmosphere compared to other tourist resorts in Campania. Perhaps less inclined to folklore, but certainly more orderly, more welcoming, more civilized. As for things to do, there are so many. Below, the most significant from our point of view.
